Songdo Future City – Level Up (Ep. 25)

A visit to South Korea’s new tallest building in Songdo. -Expand for more- Built on 1500 acres (6.1 km2) of land reclaimed from the Yellow Sea off Incheon, about 35 miles (56 km) from Seoul, Songdo International Business District is the largest private real estate development in history. By its completion date in 2015, the district is planned to contain 80000 apartments, 50000000 square feet (4600000 m2) of office space, and 10000000 square feet (930000 m2) of retail space. Songdo is home to the Northeast Asia Trade Tower, South Korea’s new tallest building. Though still under construction, the recently topped-out tower stands 312 meters high with 65 floors. Everything in Songdo will be modern and very high tech. Computers will even be built into the houses, streets, and offices as part of a wide area network. Songdo is South Korea’s future city and, once completed, will offer welcome relief to the incredibly dense and overpopulated Seoul metropolitan area. As for now, Songdo is basically a ghost town compared to the other urban areas in South Korea. Nevertheless, it is still an interesting place to visit. This district promises to be unlike any other place and, as this video suggests, it is already quite unique. Man Made Marvels 204: Songdo Future City

Imagine building an entire city from scratch. In Incheon, South Korea, 45 kilometres out of Seoul, a team of architects and builders have a 1500 acre blank canvas to build the perfect city. Songdo City is by far the largest private real estate development ever undertaken and will be linked directly to Asia’s newest high-tech airport by the 12 km long Incheon Bridge. This spectacular engineering marvel uses cutting edge construction methods to span a busy shipping channel with such extreme tides that conventional techniques are useless. Together the airport, the bridge and the master planned city will make Korea the most important trade hub in North East Asia. This is the opening title sequence from Man Made Marvels: Songdo Future City, produced by NHNZ and Beach House Pictures for Discovery Networks Asia in association with Media Development Authority of Singapore. www.yourdiscovery.com
